MEDIS film distributors to network at Morocco’s national film fest

Beyond its competitions, Morocco’s 14th National Film Festival, to be held in Tangier from February 1 to 9, will also feature the launch of a Pan-African film festival and provide the opportunity for regional film distributors to network.

Tangier is to host the launch of the 23rd Ouagadougou Pan-African Film and Television Festival, known as FESPACO, to be held this year from February 23 to March 2, according to the festival’s organisers.

Members of the new MEDIS South Mediterranean film distributor network are also to travel to Tangier during the national festival, at the invitation of its organisers, and are to meet attending professionals in the coastal city.

The MEDIS network was launched at the Dubai International Film Festival last December, thanks to the support of the European Union’s Euromed Audiovisual III programme.

“It’s very important for us to be present in Tangier,” said the network’s Moroccan president Mohamed Layadi. “We will be implementing our action programme to promote film distribution. And it’s also an excellent opportunity for Moroccan cinema. In the future, one could even imagine a film market as part of the festival!”

As has now become tradition, the Moroccan Film Centre will also present an overview of the Moroccan film sector in 2012 at the festival. This much-awaited, detailed annual report usually provides the opportunity to discuss issues related to Moroccan public policy in film. It looks set to be interesting this year, as 2012 was a busy year with regards to regulations and legislative texts linked to the sector.
